A word about names. When in Spain, Ferrater identified himself as ‘José Ferrater Mora’ (JFM) and that is how he signed his books in both English and Spanish, fulfilling a promise to his mother to retain her maiden name of ‘Mora.’ In Catalan, of course, he used ‘Josep.’ In the United States he sometimes identified himself as ‘José Maria Ferrater’ (JMF) in order to avoid confusion about his last name. To his students at Bryn Mawr, however, he became simply ‘FM.’
